Located in Rimouski, BAnQ Rimouski covers a territory with an area of more than 42,850 square kilometres. Another archives centre is located in Gaspé where the Gaspé public archives are preserved and made available to the public.

It is part of the network of 10 Bibliothèque et Archives nationales du Québec (BAnQ) archives centres located throughout Québec. Dedicated to the preservation and development of the region's public and private archives, it offers researchers and the public a consultation room and efficient personnel to guide them in the use of the wide range of materials the centre holds.

Every year, it welcomes hundreds of patrons, essentially from the educational and professional sectors. They use the centre's services for research concerning the history of their families, localities or regions.

The collections of the BAnQ Rimouski include:

  • two linear kilometres of written materials , of which approximately one-quarter is private in origin and three-quarters are public;
  • almost 150 000 photographic materials;
  • 1200 cartographic materials;
  • 14,000 architectural, engineering and technical drawings;
  • close to 300 hours of visual and sound recordings.

The private archives preserved there provide eloquent testimony of more than 300 years of history and, in particular, provide ample information about the early days of the seigneurial system in the <br/ >Bas-Saint-Laurent. They also cover art and culture, provincial and federal politics, education, the cooperative movement, the fishing industry and the Amerindian presence.

For their part, the public archives document State interventions in the fields of regional development, culture, employment, public security and justice, transportation and agriculture. Since 2010, the public archives concerning Gaspésie have been preserved in the region where they were created, at the Gaspé archives centre.
